Periodicals

Periodicals are for reference only, which means that you can only use them in the library. The latest issues of some periodicals are displayed at the Current Periodicals section on level B, while the majority of periodicals (current year issues) that the library subscribes to, are kept behind the Customer Services Counter. To borrow them for reference in the library, please ask at the Customer Services Counter.

At any one time, a library user is limited to two periodicals only. Bound volumes of previous years’ issues of periodicals can be found on the main shelves on level B.

Audio-visual materials

Audio-visual (AV) collection is now browsable to all on Level B of the library.

There are more than 900 AV items in our collection, including movies, documentaries, television serials and many others. Patrons will be able to browse and select any AV item which interests them.

To borrow AV items, patrons have to bring the items to Customer Services Counter for library staff on duty to issue them out.

Patrons can borrow a maximum of two AV items at a time, for the period of one week. Patrons can extend the borrowing period by renewing the AV items online before the due date.

Short loan books

To borrow a short loan book, go to the Customer Services Counter on level B and give library staff details (location number and barcode) of the short loan book that you require. The staff member will retrieve the book from the short loan collection and issue the book to you. You must have your library card with you, and you may borrow up to two short loan items at any one time.

The period of a short loan is overnight, and you will have to return the item back the next morning before 10am. However, if the short loan item is borrowed on Friday, the item due date and time will fall on 10am, Monday.

For more details, please go to Short Loans.

Short loan restricted—bookable books

Short-loan restricted--bookable items can only be borrowed (and returned) at the Customer Services Counter on level B of the library.

Loaned items under this category can only be used in the library during it’s normal operating hours.

Items can be booked through UNMCLOC for a maximum of three hours per day. Bookings can be done in advance for 14 days (including weekends). Only two advanced bookings are allowed in 14 days.

For more details, please go to Short Loans.

Requesting books from Central Store

"Central Store" is a closed-access storage area for old library books and audio-visual items of older editions (where newer editions are available) and for those items which have not been actively borrowed for the past five years.

When searching for books in NUsearch you may come across a location listed as “Central Store”. In order to borrow the item, you must click on “Request”. An email will be sent to the requester when the item is ready to be collected. The item will be held at the Customer Services Counter for three days, and will be returned to Central Store if it is not collected within the three days.

Courtesy notices

The library sends out a courtesy reminder e-mails two working days before an ordinary loan book is due for return or renewal. Please remember that this reminder e-mail is a courtesy service only and must be in addition to your keeping your own records of the dates your library items are due for return or renewal. Failure to receive an e-mail reminder cannot be regarded as a valid reason for having overdue loans.

Using the self-service machine

The self-service machine allows borrowers with a clear (i.e. no fines or overdue items) library account to self-issue (and self-return) library books.

Follow the on screen instructions at all times, and please remember to take your receipt which will show the due date for each item borrowed.

You are responsible for all items issued to your account.
