Gender and leadership

About the module

The module is looking at leadership and the skills, mindsets and strategies successful leaders develop and deploy. We will ask the question if these leadership qualities are related to gender, starting from the well documented premise that the further up you look on the career ladder of every profession the fewer women you see. In this module we ask the question why despite 60% of fresh graduates being women, so few make it into top management.

We will look at equality law, industry practice, societies expectations of different genders, media influences and the ambitions and self-images of both genders. We encourage students to critically analyse the impact on men and women of current gender norms, especially when it comes to career decisions.

2016/2017 activities

This year the participating students will organise a lecture series comprising external and internal speakers on the topics related to leadership and gender. At an inaugural workshop all participants will take part in identifying and selecting the themes to be covered. Students will divide into workgroups concentrating on one these and each group will organise one seminar covering their topic. The seminars will be open to all students and staff as well as the general public if the group wishes to promote their event.

Timing and participation

The module is run on a year-long basis with the seminars taking place in both semesters.

The inaugural workshop will take place on the 28 October 2016 at 14:30 to 16:30.

The module is open to students from all faculties at all levels. There is no cap on the number of participants. The more participants, the more seminars take place and topics are covered.
