                                   International students Careers Series 

 

Start ahead with our “Kick-start your careers!” – International student career series.

Throughout the year, you can attend a series of workshops designed for international students. These are customised to help you to brush up your skills and gain valuable career insights during your study abroad. 


                                                List of Workshops 

 1) Job Search Strategies for the International Arena 

You’ve submitted your resume and cover letter online for the job openings that seem to fit you. Is there anything else you can do to land a right job? Job hunting is not about number, it is about strategy. To be a successful job seeker, you need to utilize the importance of job search strategies to effectively market yourself and avoid the same mistakes.

Students will be led along the discovery of the expectation of employers and of self. This would apply to formulate a strategy during their course of job hunting. Participants will also learn about the major job search tools, exploring the pros of each job search channels. You will also learn how to make the best use of online portals and social media for today’s job search.

·         - Special challenges for international job applicants

·         - Knowledge of job market and job search process

·         - Essential job search strategies for international students

·         - Learn about the major job search channels

·         - Managing social media relationship

·         - How to get along and get ahead socially and professionally at work

 2) Raising your Value as an International Student

International students might not aware that the years abroad can help them to develop skill sets value by employers. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the value of an international student by highlighting their experience and relate how these experiences can apply to the job.

This workshop will discuss how to maximise your value as an international students. Questions such as “How to connect your international study experience to career”, “How to optimize opportunity available during your study?” and “how to equip yourself with international competencies?” will be highlighted.

Outline:

·         - Career Readiness SWOT Analysis and Work Values Test

·         - Highlight and enhance your profile

·         - Discover your interest, values and personality

·         - Tips to create a professional development profile (on paper & digital media)

·         - Action steps to further raise your value


 3) Find you Edge and Employers will Find You 


The succession of the previous workshop, this interactive session spotlight on “how do you value your experience abroad?”, “how do employers view your international education experience through recruitment process?” and “how students can market their international experience in a career relevant ways?”.

Outline:

·         - Self-reflection and empower yourself

·         - Key competencies employers look for when hiring

·         - Positive traits in an international graduate

·         - Career connection: define your experience for employers

·         - Practical suggestions to boost one’s edge (global competence, gaining reality of outside world and profession and many more).

 4) Working in Malaysia


Living and working in Malaysia is possible yet challenging. It is always not easy to find a job or get a permit, there are plenty of issue require your attention. Are you curious about working in Malaysia and not sure where to begin?

This session will provides you with job market overview in Malaysia and info about work visa. Participants will also learn about the challenges faced by employers and gather basic information on potential employers.

·         - What is happening in the Malaysia job market

·         - Challenges and managing your expectations

·         - How to research for potential employers

·         - Eligibility for work permit

·         - How we can support your job search


 5) Cross-cultural Networking


Networking has always played an important role in today’s corporate world. It is a cornerstone to explore career opportunities or to facilitate your career advancement. Albeit the difference in etiquette among cultures, the reasons for networking are generally similar, that is to build rapport with others and to learn from each other’s’ experience.

Students will learn about the importance of cross-cultural networking in job search and business. Students will learn on how to craft a conversation starter and elevator speech through demo and role play. This workshop will also expose the participants to some common practises at local and international business settings.

Outline:

·         - Learn how to network across the culture borders

·         - Essential skills and traits of a good networker

·         - How to overcome challenges during cross-cultural networking

·         - Develop confidence and authority with conversation skills

·         - Establish your professional presence and professional grace at local and international business settings.
