The Library Open Day at SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih, a Tamil vernacular primary school signifies the School of Education students’ realisation of their aspiration to contribute to the sustainable development goals through the EDU22 library refurbishment initiative. Seven students and seven academic staff from the School of Education attended the event, which took place on 13 August 2022.

The library refurbishment initiative was envisioned in partnership with SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih in support of SDG4, Quality Education and SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals, and aimed at ensuring inclusive and equitable access to quality education as well as promoting lifelong learning opportunities for the SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih school community. Along with the library refurbishment, a story telling session and a series of digital literacy workshops were also conducted in collaboration with Kalsom Movement to nurture students’ ICT and literacy competence. To support the initiative, the University of Nottingham Malaysia Library also donated Reader’s Digest magazines to the primary school.

The Library Open Day at SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih was officiated via a hybrid model. Dr Jason Pandya Wood, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Mr Mathi Alagan, the Headmaster of SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih delivered their wishes virtually. Dr Subarna Sivapalan, the Head of School of Education launched the event physically. Upon the launch of the Library Open Day, the newly refurbished library was inaugurated through handprint art. School of Education staff and students as well as the SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih teachers and students left their handprints on the library entrances. These handprints symbolise the wonders of learning that School of Education embraces and the continued relationship between the School of Education and SJK(T) Ladang Semenyih. The Library Open Day was made more meaningful via fun-filled educational activities such as story creation and running dictation facilitated by School of Education volunteers. The event ended with a prize giving ceremony.

EDU22 is an initiative of a group of dynamic School of Education students who aspire to make a difference in education. EDUC22 is underpinned by the belief that all students, regardless of gender and background have the right to learn in a safe, nurturing environment. Projects organised under EDUC22 include Book Donation Drive, Fundraising and Library Enrichment Initiatives to date. EDU22 welcomes collaboration with other Schools at UNM.
