Associate Professor,
MariKannan Maharajan received his PhD in pharmacy (2014), master's degree in pharmacy practice (2006), and bachelor's degree in pharmacy (2004). After completing his master's he started his career in academia as a lecturer and gained significant professional experience in teaching from various universities across countries. In his academic career, he was holding a variety of appointments and demonstrated experience in teaching.
Dr Kannan has significant experience of scientific research, works in a wide range of interprofessional collaborative research within the field of public health, patient safety, behavioral science and pharmacy education. He has over 50 publications to date in international journals. He has a special interest in technology-enhanced learning and received various awards for his innovation in teaching. He also held the posts of director of postgraduate programme in pharmacy practice and led various initiatives such as interprofessional learning, patient safety education and student mobility programme.

Dr Kannan aims to train competent and compassionate healthcare professionals through constructivism and active learning strategies in his teaching. He teaches undergraduate and graduate students in pharmacy with various innovative technology-enhanced teaching methods. To promote meta-cognition of learners, he creates opportunities for learners to reflect on their learning and to help them to take responsibility for their own learning.

Currently, Dr Kannan is working closely with researchers from various departments and schools locally and internationally to establish a research network to design and execute research projects in evidence-based medicine, which can be extended to the context of Pharmacoepidemiology.
Dr Kannan is passionate about research in the field of pharmacy and public health. He has significant research experience in cardiovascular pharmacology, examined molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular complications in myocardial infarction in his doctoral research. He recognised the challenges of promoting health while treating complex diseases, especially infectious diseases and its prevention. His research projects focussed the preparedness of healthcare professionals against some of the infectious diseases such as COVID-19, Ebola, and Zika virus diseases.
Dr Kannan aims is to apply the evidence-based practice approach for the clinical decision-making to promote rational use of medicines.
