Opening Bank Account
How do I open a Bank Account?
- Students can open a Malaysian bank account only after their Student Pass has been endorsed in their passport.
- You will need to wait for your passport to be returned by the Visa Office after the Student Pass endorsement process is completed.
- Student Pass endorsement usually takes approximately 14–21 working days after your passport has been submitted to EMGS.
- Your passport will be submitted to EMGS after you have completed your medical examination.
- Once your passport has been returned with the endorsed Student Pass, you may proceed to open a Malaysian bank account.
What should I do in the meantime?
Students are strongly advised to plan their finances carefully before arriving in Malaysia.
- Bring sufficient funds to cover your initial expenses.
- Ensure you have an internationally enabled debit or credit card that can be used in Malaysia.
- Be prepared to use your international card and/or available funds for approximately 2–3 months while waiting for your Student Pass endorsement and bank account opening.
- Bring or exchange some Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for immediate expenses upon arrival.
For Students Below 18 Years Old
Students below 17 years old are advised to make additional financial arrangements before arriving in Malaysia. Please note that, depending on the bank's requirements, students below 18 may not be issued a debit card and may instead receive a savings or passbook account.
In such cases:
- Online transactions may not be available through the account.
- Students may need to visit the bank branch in person to withdraw cash.
- Ensure that you have sufficient funds and an alternative means of payment for your daily expenses.
Once Your Student Pass Has Been Endorsed
After receiving your passport with the endorsed Student Pass, you may proceed to open a bank account. The bank may require some or all of the following documents:
- Original passport with the endorsed Student Pass.
- Letter for Opening a Bank Account issued by International Student Support.
- Offer Letter issued by Student Registry.
- Student Confirmation Letter issued by Student Registry.
- EMGS Approval Letter – a printed copy can be requested from the Visa Office.
- E-VAL issued by Malaysian Immigration.
- Minimum initial deposit of approximately RM250–RM300, depending on the bank.
Important
- Bank account facilities and requirements may vary depending on the student's age and the individual bank's policies.
- Students should check directly with the bank for the latest requirements before opening an account.
- Students are strongly advised to plan how they will access funds for the initial 2–3 months, particularly while waiting for their Student Pass endorsement and bank account arrangements.
