Course overview
Biotechnology aims to apply the latest molecular approaches to develop technologies and novel products to address modern-day problems in food production, healthcare, industrial and environmental sectors. This degree emphasizes on applications of recent biotechnological advances to reduce hunger, combat diseases, produce cleaner energy and to develop more efficient manufacturing processes. Topics covered include genomics and proteomics, genetic engineering and modifications of microorganisms, crops and animals, detection of food pathogens and development of novel industrial products, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. The course allows a high degree of specialisation into various areas of biotechnology in years two and three. Specialistareas include plant, microbial/industrial, medical/pharmaceutical biotechnology. The course includes an optional industrial placement in year 2, which will enable you to gain industry experience, crucial for your career development and employment. In year 3, you will carry out a research project which will help to develop specialist knowledge in an area of your choice and transferable skills including data analysis and presentation, effective communication and independent thinking.

Foundation
The Foundation in Science is a 1+3 year programme that results in direct progression to the undergraduate degrees offered within the Faculty of Science. This rigorous programme provides students with a strong academic background that will result in enhanced language, mathematics, critical thinking and study skills.
Students on this programme also chose from a range of elective modules that provide the opportunity to sample topics related to their chosen undergraduate pathway such as chemistry, ecology, computer programming or psychology.
Careers
The combination of specialist topics you choose in your second and third years will influence the career opportunities available to you. In recent years, many of our graduates have found employment in a range of careers including research workers in industrial and government research organisations; advisors in management, sales and marketing; forensic biologists with law enforcement agencies; science advisors for lawmakers; science journalists and writers; teachers and lecturers in schools and higher learning institutions; and consultants in in biotechnology related industries.
Many graduates have chosen to continue their studies and undertake further research training to MSc, MPhil or PhD level at The University of Nottingham or elsewhere.
