Research overview

The MPhil and PhD biomedical programmes are 1-2 year and 3-4 years in duration respectively. Research is crucial to the biomedical industry with many of our academic staff at the leading edge of scientific and healthcare developments. The current research curriculum allows students to gain hands on experience in their chosen field as well as participating in regular research symposiums. Both are an opportunity to develop their research network and practice their science outreach skills.

Course content

Healthcare delivery systems

In the area of healthcare delivery systems, we extract innovative models and approaches from across sectors to alleviate health challenges in resource-limited low-income countries.

Entry requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2025 entry.

PhD

A master’s degree (or international equivalent), plus an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) (or international equivalent) in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

OR

A first-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

MPhil

An upper second-class honours degree (2:1) (or international equivalent) in biomedical sciences, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

Applicants must hold a degree from a recognised university. We welcome students from all academic backgrounds and consider a wide range of qualifications. For certain programmes, prior qualifications must be in related fields. As part of the admissions process, applicants may be invited to attend an interview if further evaluation is deemed necessary.

Eligibility can only be confirmed upon submission of a complete application.

IELTS (Academic):

6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in each element)

TOEFL (iBT):

90 (minimum 19 in Writing and listening, 20 in Reading and 22 in Speaking)

PTE (Academic):

71 (with no less than 65 in each element)
MUET: Band 4.5
  • IELTS (Academic), TOEFL iBT, and PTE (Academic) test results must be less than two years old.
  • IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted.
  • IELTS Academic Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and PTE Academic Online are not accepted.
  • MUET results are valid for five years from the release date.

With a wide variety of eventual specialisation, our Biomedical Sciences research degree is purposely designed to maximise your career options. Having a strong toolkit of research skills provides an excellent basis for entry into the biomedical or biotechnology industries in either a research capacity or clinical trials evaluation. The qualification allows students to work in roles of a medical scientific liaison capacity helping to interpret advanced research data for healthcare professionals. The University of Nottingham Malaysia has and will also continue to produce academics who work in institutions worldwide to train the next generation of biomedical scientists!

The University has an established Careers Advisory Service (CAS) that provides students with essential resources and guidance for career choices offering many opportunities to develop the skills needed to plan and manage your future. Our Careers Advisory Service will work with you to improve and maximise your employability skills as well as providing essential resources and guidance that will assist you with job/course applications. They will facilitate searches for appropriate work experience placements and connect you to a wide range of prospective employers or training opportunities. In addition the division of biomedical sciences provides guidance and maintains good connections with both our alumni and collaborators in industry to facilitate career and future employment opportunities.

Our graduates enter a wide range of roles both in Malaysia and internationally. Example job titles of our alumni within industrial roles include that of ‘Senior Scientist’ which provide a competitive salary, leadership responsibilities and job satisfaction.
