Research overview
The MPhil and PhD biomedical programmes are 1-2 year and 3-4 years in duration respectively. Research is crucial to the biomedical industry with many of our academic staff at the leading edge of scientific and healthcare developments. The current research curriculum allows students to gain hands on experience in their chosen field as well as participating in regular research symposiums. Both are an opportunity to develop their research network and practice their science outreach skills.

Healthcare delivery systems
In the area of healthcare delivery systems, we extract innovative models and approaches from across sectors to alleviate health challenges in resource-limited low-income countries.
Entry requirements
All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2026 entry.
PhD
A good master’s degree (usually merit or higher), plus an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.
Or
A first-class honours degree in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.
MPhil
An upper second-class honours degree (2:1) in biomedical sciences, pharmacology, pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

Applicants must possess a degree awarded by a recognised university.
Faculty-Specific Requirements
- Faculty of Science and Engineering: A qualification in a related field is usually necessary for admission to postgraduate programmes.
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences: Consideration may be given to those whose previous degree is in a different discipline if they have relevant work experience and can supply further supporting documents as outlined in the application checklist.
In instances where additional evaluation is required, applicants may be invited to participate in an interview.

- IELTS (Academic), TOEFL iBT, and PTE (Academic) test results must be less than two years old.
- IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted.
- IELTS Academic Online, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and PTE Academic Online are not accepted.
- MUET results are valid for five years from the release date.
- English language tests must be taken at a test centre situated in the applicant’s country of residence.
- International applicants who meet the University’s requirements may also need to submit extra documents or an approved English test for MOHE, if required.
