School of Computer Science

The School of Computer Science was formally established in 1986 on the main University Campus in Nottingham and subsequently moved to the Jubilee Campus in 1999. Computer Science at the Malaysia Campus is a fully integrated part of the School in Nottingham and all programmes offered at the Malaysia Campus are identical to those at Nottingham. As part of its mission to respond to the needs of students, employees and employers, the School of Computer Science at the Malaysia Campus is offering a variety of degree programmes directly relevant to the emerging knowledge economy. While this initiative is helping to produce a new generation of knowledge and IT workers, we are also keen to assist in updating the skills of experienced employees, enabling them to participate fully in the rapidly changing workplace.

The University of Nottingham has a high reputation within international industry. Skills obtained in a degree are not only those relating to the subject of study but also derived from the method of study. Advantages for Nottingham graduates include having studied in English, which is especially useful for those working in IT and related industries. Our degrees involve a high level of project work including group projects and this helps students to develop interpersonal and group working skills as well as presentation and problem solving skills.

Locally international companies such as Agilent, Shell and Siemens have recruited our graduates. We are also involved in developing research with international companies such as BT, INTEL and Ti as well as large local IT companies such as MIMOS. This means our students have an exposure to industrially relevant projects in their final year in particular, which makes them attractive to employers as they leave.

A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline will obviously open up careers in the IT and computer software industry but a degree from a good university will allow access to all sorts of careers. The larger proportion of the School's graduates will, however, find jobs in the IT field. Typical jobs for a Computer Science graduate include those in systems analysis and design as well as programming and computer software development. Those with Information Systems degrees would be well qualified for systems analysis work and also for work in developing e-commerce applications. All of our students are required to have developed programming abilities throughout their programme, so programming jobs should be open to all. Our education style emphasises understanding of the fundamentals without neglecting the development of strong technical skills. As a result our graduates are equipped not only for the world of work as they leave university but also with the skills needed to go on developing in their careers in the future.
