Introduction to translation and interpreting

About the module

This module is available to all registered University of Nottingham students.
Students enrolling on this module must be fluent in English and one of the following languages: Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia, French, German, Korean, Japanese or Spanish. The level of proficiency will be assessed by a lecturer prior to enrolment. This course is open to Year 2 and Year 3 students only.

Aims and objectives 

This module provides an introduction to the skills of translation and interpreting aiming to help the student develop a critical approach to these areas by exploring the main textual, linguistic and cultural issues associated with translation and interpreting. 
At the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • demonstrate an understanding of linguistic, textual and cultural issues relating to translation
  • use different techniques to resolve translation difficulties
  • critically analyse the source text
  • have developed a reasonable range of specialised vocabulary used in the process of translation
  • demonstrate some knowledge of the variety of translation approaches appropriate to a range of texts
  • have developed a wide comprehension of sophisticated written and spoken language 

This module involves 

Students will attend one-hour lecture per week with module convener and conduct practical activity throughout the module period. The workshop will include practical activity on literature and entertainment, journalism, academic and educational texts, and consumer-oriented texts. English is used as the source language and the student has the possibility to choose his/her target language subject to availability of staff/students. 

Timetable

Every Thursday 9-10am ( EA51), 16-18pm (BA10) starting from 25 Sept 2025.

Only 5 places are assigned to Nottingham Advantage Award Students.  If you are interested, please email naa@nottingham.edu.my to register. The registration deadline is18 Sept 2025 ( Thursday ). 

Regulations

Students are required to sign a " Learning Agreement " in order to join the class.
