The Jan Atkin Prize

What is the Jan Atkin Prize?

This prize fund has been established by Emeritus Professor Brian Atkin, former CEO of the University of Nottingham University Malaysia (2003-2008) in the memory of his late wife, Jan Atkin.

Jan was actively involved with UNM students during her time in Malaysia. This prize is by nomination only and aims to award worthy students who have met both academic standards and who are deemed to have made the greatest contribution to campus or to the community.

Scholarship FAQs

How do I nominate someone? (Staff)
This prize is awarded by nomination only. Academic and administrative staff are strongly encouraged to nominate any student who they feel is particularly deserving of this prize.  Nominees should be actively contributing to UNM outside of the classroom while meeting satisfactory academic standards. Students may nominate another student but the applications must be seconded by a member of staff as well.
Who can nominate me? (Students)

Although applicants can be nominated by fellow students, it is preferable that they are nominated by a member of staff who can vouch for the validity of the application. If students are nominated by fellow students, they will be required to also provide the name of a member of staff who will second the nomination.

If I send my application electronically, do I also need a paper copy with my nominator’s signature on it?

No, but you may be asked to provide proof of your nomination and supporting evidence to back your application at a later date.

What is the prize?
Three selected students will receive a cash prize of RM5,000

How do I receive the money awarded to me?

If your application is successful and you meet the academic requirement of being able to progress to the following year of study, the details of how to access the fund will be sent to you by email at the start of the next academic year.

What happens if I am not able to progress to the following year?

Your application will then be deemed unsuccessful and the money will be put back in the fund and carried forward to the following year.

Are my chances affected if I’m already funded in my studies?

No, this is open to everybody regardless of how you fund your studies.

How do I write the Eligibility Statement?

There are several main points to remember when writing this statement

  • Complete the statement in your own words
  • Consider your audience; The prize committee will give priority to applicants who provide clear descriptions of their contributions to UNM life or the wider community
  • Please explain clearly and give specific examples of how and in what ways you believe you have met the selection criteria
  • Describe why your efforts could be viewed as being the “greatest” contribution to campus or community life
  • The tone should be neither too academic, nor too personal but enjoyable to read
  • Make sure all your information is accurate and that you will be prepared to discuss in some detail, if required
  • Make sure you give facts and consider answers for: where, who, what, how, why?
  • Keep to the word limit
  • Show your statement to your nominator/person whose comments you respect
  • Proofread
