Employment post-COVID: Industrial insights and what you can do to prepare yourselves

Employment-article

On 11 March 2021, the Alumni and Donor Relations Office (ADRO) of UNM hosted a webinar titled Employment post-COVID: Industrial insights and what you can do to prepare yourselves moderated by Professor Maniam Kaliannan from the Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) Malaysia.

Two industrial insiders Ong Yoke Pei and Chin Wai Hong, who are also UNM alumni, shared their experience and gave advice as guest speakers. The event was attended by 40 individuals comprising both alumni and students.

Ong Yoke Pei (Psychology, 2014) is currently a manager in the UK-based recruitment firm Hays and manages 15 specialist consultants in addition to overseeing the firm’s life sciences, supply chain and engineering functions. She has over five years of experience in recruitment.

The other speaker was Chin Wai Hong (Management Psychology, 2015), a Senior Certified Practitioner (SCP) of the Society of Human Resources Management and also a KPI professional. He has trained employees from more than 260 Malaysian Companies and over 500 businesspersons in HR core knowledge during the course of his career.

The following key advice was shared by the speakers to the attendees after they shared their takes on how attendees could prepare themselves for a changed, post-COVID economy.

"Think like a business owner or entrepreneur when you are doing your work. Keep learning new skills and knowledge and experience, whatever you know today, it will expire tomorrow. And finally, embrace the Hunter mindset, it is the only way to make yourself relevant in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world." said Chin Wai Hong

Ong Yoke Pei meanwhile, recognised the importance of social networking in this day and age and had this nugget of wisdom to impart: “Watch out for all the little things around you, you could possibly even land a job through Instagram!”

The event was well received with attendees stating that they acquired plenty of knowledge and would attend future ADRO events. Khaw Kai En (Psychology, year 2), one of the attendees left an in-depth review of the session:

“Overall, the session was fruitful and informative to me and I hope that I will have the opportunity to attend similar talks in the future. For instance, Miss Yoke Pei, the first speaker, had given me a great insight into the employment of different industries, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, Miss Yoke Pei, being an alumnus of UNM, had shared her experience and the ways we should network and upgrade ourselves, which helps me in knowing and discover what career employment expects now. Also, Mr Wai Hong, being the second speaker of the session, also delivers his sharing in an attractive and creative way, which aids me in understand that knowledge, choices, and mindset are very important throughout your career life. At the end of his session, he shared a line that caught my attention the most:

"Unleash your passion, build your story, change your mindset and live your life".

Recording of the webinar is available here.
