Poet and sustainability champion awarded with alumni awards

The University of Nottingham recognises Professor Malachi Edwin Vethamani and Mathialagan Magendran with the University of Nottingham Alumni Laureate Awards.

The prestigious Alumni Laureate Awards was introduced to the University of Nottingham as a means to reward and honour the achievements made by University of Nottingham alumni who have made incredible contributions to their community, have created new avenues for their research and have put forth outstanding displays of creativity and leadership in their fields.

For the Alumni Laureate Awards 2020, we have two members of the University of Nottingham Malaysia community receive this award in two categories: The Special Excellence Award and The Recent Graduate Award.

Special Excellence Award

The Special Excellence Award was presented to Professor Malachi Edwin Vethamani, who graduated with his doctorate in English from the University of Nottingham in 1996. Professor Malachi, as he is fondly known as by students and staff alike, is a Malaysian poet, writer, critic, professor and bibliographer. His contributions to teaching in Malaysia have been recognised and lauded by the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association via their Special Award and a MELTA Award for creative teachers is named after him. He is a recipient of the Asian Education Leadership Award conferred by the World Education Congress in Mumbai, India. He is recognised as a leading researcher and expert in the field of Malaysian Literature in English. Professor Malachi Edwin Vethamani was formerly the Head of the School of English at the University of Nottingham Malaysia and was also the Professor of Modern English Literature. In 2019, as a recognition of his contributions, he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Achievement Medal.

Recent Graduate Award

 

Mathialagan

The Recent Graduate Award was received by Mathialagan Magendran, who graduated with a Master's in Environmental Monitoring and Management in 2014. Mathialagan Magendran is a member of the board of directors at UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei as well as the Corporate Sustainability Specialist for a pharmaceutical manufacturing public listed company. As an experienced corporate sustainability practitioner, he has a passion for leading sustainability initiatives and in managing local and international sustainability framework related systems in order to move towards a more successful economy while keeping the environment and social pillars at the forefront. He also plays an instrumental role in formulating designated sustainability strategies for corporate companies to meet globally recognised sustainability standards such as the inclusion of FTSE4 Good Bursa Malaysia Index, a series of ethical investment stock market indices. He provides strategic leadership to UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei towards ensuring effective implementation of sustainable development related goals within the region. Mathialagan also has made contributions to academic research on the conservation of forestry, with his work being published in the 2020 Journal of Sustainable Forestry.
