CSR initiatives by alumni during COVID-19

Alumni CSR - article

The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) would like to acknowledge the spirit of giving that has been embodied by our alumni, who are making a big difference during these unprecedented times.

COVID-19 has changed the way billions of people live, work, study and relate to one another. This pandemic has forced us to keep our distance while bringing us closer together.  It has inspired our alumni to contribute to those affected by the pandemic through various corporate social responsiblity (CSR) initiatives.

Applied Psychology and Management alumnus, Waqas Tariq has been raising money to distribute ration packs to ease the burden of marginalised families in Pakistan. His group has raised enough funds to distribute three weeks’ worth of rations to 198 households in Bhittaiabad Colony, Block 9, Gulistan e Jauhar and they are continuing to seek donations for their cause.

Iranjali Abeyratne, alumna from Management Psychology, the founder of Edhati Consultancy has launched a campaign called “Facts on Feelings” that provides mental health support to people in Sri Lanka through social media. Through this campaign, Iranjali and team discussed the psychology behind feelings and shared some tips on how to cope, deal and adapt psychologically to the period of transitions.

In Maldives, our Computer Science alumnus Arushad Ahmedco-founder and chief technology officer at Javaabu - a software development firm - has stepped up to tackle loss of jobs by developing a reporting module system called JobCenter for the Ministry of Economic Development to keep track of people whose jobs have been affected during the COVID-19 crisis. As part of its CSR initiatives, the company has also helped the Ministry of Education to develop an online training resources sharing platform Filaa, for schools and students in the country.

These are just some examples of how humanity can flourish in times of crisis and how together we can all get through these challenging times. The university is so proud of our alumni and their acts of service, they are our UNM Heroes.
