Research at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Our Department’s multi-disciplinary research covers a wide range of projects, from integrating AI and nanomaterial into healthcare technologies to breaking new grounds in 5G communication and autonomous vehicles. Our extensive primary research covers:

1.Artificial Intelligence and Edge Computing

We explore the potential of utilising deep learning AI in IoT edge devices, such as smart devices detecting the presence of COVID-19 in x-ray scans. Our work focuses on expanding the limitations of edge computing while also contributing to explainable AI, a study of AI clarifying its algorithms and models to human users.

2. Drones, Robotics, and Control Systems

We advance the potential possibilities of drones and robotics deployment by exploring multiple use cases, such as leveraging drones in medical systems or remote areas. Our work also covers the enhancement of power systems and control systems of drones and robotics.

3. Automated Vehicle Engineering

We focus on the practical applications of automation in various types of vehicles, from hybrid electric vehicles to unmanned aerial vehicles. Our research explores solutions and advancements that promote better and safer use of vehicles, such as active braking systems and safety testing for autonomous vehicles.

4. Power System, Smart Grid, and Renewable Energy

We conduct critical research on energy storage systems and relevant energy policies. Our research covers a broad spectrum of areas, such as the analysis of hybrid renewable energy systems, control and optimization of power systems, and the integration of distributed energy sources in the grid.

5. Nanomaterial-based Electrochemical Biosensors

We develop the next generation of point-of-care diagnostic tools that leverage AI and nanomaterial-based electrochemical biosensors. Our research aims to produce cutting-edge healthcare technologies that can monitor, track, and transmit real-time health data for better disease management.

6.Antennas and Propagation, and 5G Communications

We focus on the innovations of 5G communications through in-depth research, such as radio propagation measurements and modelling in wireless communication environments. Our research contributes to real-world applications, such as intelligent base station planning and placement, antenna measurements, and accurate propagation prediction.

7.Cybersecurity, Signal Processing, and Image Processing

We study the implementation of signal processing and image processing in cybersecurity systems and other applications. Our work contributes to real-world applications, such as verifying digital users on apps using the Electronic Know-Your-Customer (eKYC) process and enhancing highway camera surveillance systems run by AI.
