Particle is a literary and arts magazine under the School of English of University of Nottingham Malaysia. Publishing biannually, you can find our issues exclusively on this page. We aim to provide a platform in amplifying the voice of both emerging and established writers and artists.

Particle offers students the opportunity to gain key experience in assessing, editing, designing, publication and promotion of the magazine. With connections to writers and publishing professionals, Particle offers critical hands-on experience for those pursuing the publishing industry. Our faculty advisor is Dr Shivani Sivagurunathan.

For more information, check out our website here where we open for submissions, notify any upcoming events, and publish a blog that features interviews, essays and more!

Issue #23

Man is a small world and the world is a large man. Then images of forms of the spheres, elements and generators opened up in the world, so man was the last generator in the world. God created him as a collector of the truths of the entire world and made him a successor in it.”— Ibn Arabi, The Meccan Revelations

Issue #22

No long-winded elaboration is necessary for the role of sound in poetry. Josephine Ng keeps a steady beat as she grieves the loss of her ah ma. Oswin Tan paces himself through thoughtfully-placed rhyme in his ode to a pen. Anisa, on the other hand, may make use of tired out end-rhymes, yet she effectively conveys the retribution of a grandmother who is simply tired of being bitten by bugs all the time.

Issue #21: Ephemera

Every baby born will one day die. Whether sooner or later, it will feel like they go before their time. Such is the nature of all that breeds happiness. What delights the heart is always fleeting, gone in a blink like a shot of tequila. Hence, we learn to savour the moment. We immortalise memory and experience in art, so that we may relive them, vicariously, through creative imitation.

Issue #20: Kaleidoscope

Just as a kaleidoscope is multifaceted and complex, the chaotic beauty of our pieces comes from reflections of one another, drawing on perceptions of the self and everything before that. The what and hows that have shaped our identities or environment in some way tell us our humanity runs deep and wild within.

Issue #19: Rediscovery

For Particle’s Issue 19, Rediscovery, our pieces explore the nostalgia and melancholy that come with seeing old things with a fresh perspective (some quite literally!). As you read on, you may find the process of growing up, heartbreak, or purpose-finding all too familiar. Or you might be discovering them through different magnifying glasses.

Issue #18: Adrift

As we continue to move forward in life, there will be moments where you feel lost— lost in the middle of an ocean, where only adverse emotions exist.

We become so lost that we would let ourselves float aimlessly, voluntarily. Where was the strength we thought we had? Or the resilience we had built from the ground up to strive forward? We had neither at that moment, as waves lapped against our bodies and stripped bare skin.

Issue #17: Matahari

In Issue 17 Matahari, you will find intriguing works - works that will cause you to stop and wonder: how? How did they find comfort in the darkness and learn to wait patiently for the vow of a returning sun? How did they have faith in the dark unknown and find a hand to hold in the midst of it all?   We hope you find love and light within these lines; we hope they provide you with the sunshine you’ve been yearning for.

Issue #16: In Flux

This past year we have all been plunged into darkness. We have navigated, and continue to navigate a global pandemic and its aftermath. It has impacted us all in different ways, yet many of us have felt the same: isolated, anxious, and beaten in the face of a future in flux.

Issue #15: Time Zones

Issue 15 is dedicated to literary and art pieces that reflect how people are dealing with the shift from the public to the private and how they’re navigating their own time and spaces. What emerged was the longing, love and human connection that people yearn for when living “alone, together” during the pandemic.

Issue #14: Solace

During uncertain times, we often look for solace.   For many, it is found in family, friends or work. For us, we find comfort in our words.   With this sentiment in mind, this year’s Spring issue of Particle was created. With this iteration, we aim to relieve you of the fear, worry, concerns and sadness synonymous with this unprecedented period of our l ives.
