Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Who is eligible to apply for the student exchange or transfer programme?
All full-time UNM undergraduate students in good academic standing are eligible. Most exchange opportunities require you to have completed at least one year of study. While transfer students need to complete 2 years of their studies in UNM before transferring to Nottingham UK or China. Inbound students must be nominated by their home university (if from a partner institution) or apply directly under the fee-paying route.
2. Can I study at UNM if I am not from a partner university?
Yes. If your home institution is not a UNM partner, you may still apply through the Study Abroad Programme (Fee-Paying) option.
3. Will my credits be recognised when I go with the student exchange programme?
Yes. Academic credits earned abroad are usually recognised by UNM, provided they align with your degree requirements and you achieve the required pass grade. It is important to consult your School or Faculty before applying to ensure modules can be transferred back into your programme.
4. Who do I pay the tuition fees to for exchange or transfer programme?
  • Inbound inter-campus exchange students: Pay tuition fees at your home institution, with no additional tuition charged by UNM.
  • Outbound inter-campus exchange students: Continue paying tuition fees to UNM. Additional costs such as visa fees, flights, accommodation, and living expenses abroad are your responsibility.
  • Outbound inter-campus transfer students: UNM students who permanently transfer to either the UK or Ningbo campus will be required to pay tuition fees directly to the host campus in the respective local currency, GBP for the UK campus and RMB for the Ningbo.
5. Do I need a visa for the student exhange programme?
  • Inbound students: Yes. Once accepted, UNM will provide guidance and documentation for your Malaysian student visa application.
  • Outbound students: Visa requirements depend on the host country. The International Student Support (ISS) team will provide advice and assistance throughout the visa process.

Please note that visa applications must be submitted directly by the student to the relevant embassy or visa centre, in line with official procedures. The university will support you with guidance, but the responsibility for completing and submitting the application rests with you.
6. Where will I live during the exchange or transfer programme?
  • Inbound students: UNM offers a range of on-campus accommodation options, including en-suite and shared facilities. Off-campus housing is also available nearby.
  • Outbound students: Accommodation options vary by host university. Most partner institutions provide student housing or guidance on private rentals.
7. When should I apply?

Application deadlines vary depending on the programme:

  • Inbound exchange and study abroad: Typically apply 4–6 months before the semester start.
  • Outbound mobility: Students are encouraged to apply at least one semester in advance to allow sufficient time for approvals, visas, and preparations.
8. Can postgraduate students join the study abroad programmes?

Yes. PhD students can apply for the Outbound PhD Mobility Programme, which allows you to undertake part of your research at the University of Nottingham UK (UNUK) or University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). While it isn’t compulsory, it’s a valuable opportunity if your research would benefit from international experience. To apply, consult your school supervisor first, then submit your application to the International Student Support (ISS) Team.

9. What’s the difference between the Student Exchange and Student Transfer programmes?

The Student Exchange Programme lets you spend one semester or up to a year studying at our UK or China campus before returning to complete your degree in Malaysia. You’ll continue paying your tuition fees in MYR during your exchange.

The Student Transfer Programme allows you to permanently transfer to either our UK or Ningbo, China campus to complete and graduate there. In this case, you’ll pay tuition fees based on the host country’s rate.
