My IT to-do list
We’re excited to welcome all our new students to UNM – a place of discovery, growth, and opportunity. As you begin this exciting new chapter, our IT Services team is here to ensure you’re digitally ready from day one.
As new students you must complete the following:
- Activate my University IT Account
- Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Apply for your university card
Important: Please check your personal inbox for an email with the subject line: 'Activate University Username and Upload Student Photo'. Receiving this email means you are now eligible to complete the steps above.
1. Activate my University IT Account
An IT account is issued to each new student as part of the registration process. You will first need to activate your account to retrieve your official University username and temporary password. You will be given the chance to change your password during the activation.
Steps to activate your account
- Go to IT Accounts.
- Enter the following credentials:-
Surname: [ Enter your surname ]
Date of birth: [ Enter your date of birth. Example: If it's 5th February 2010, then enter 05/02/2010 ]
Student ID: [ Enter your student ID number. Example: 20001212 ]
- Read the Acceptable Use Policy and tick on "I have read and understood the statement...".
- Your account details will be displayed on the screen.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your security questions and answers.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to change your password (this step is COMPULSORY otherwise you may face issues accessing our University IT systems).
- If you get an error and are unable to proceed, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
2. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
You will need to enter a security code into your device to use our University IT systems. This is called Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and it helps to keep your account secure. The University recommends using Microsoft Authenticator to generate these security codes, as it provides the most secure and convenient authentication method.
Steps to set up Microsoft Authenticator
- Important: You must complete the previous step, 1. Activate my University IT Account before you can proceed.
- Follow the instructions in our Microsoft Authenticator setup guide.
3. Apply for Your University Card
To apply for a student card, you must first upload an appropriate photo of yourself.
Steps to upload your photo
- Important: If you can't log in, try again tomorrow. If the issue persists after two days, please contact the IT Service Desk.
- Go to University Card.
- Enter the following credentials:-
Username: [ Enter your student ID number. Example: 20001212 ]
Password: [ Enter your date of birth. Example: If it's 5th February 2010, then enter 05022010 ]
- Click Login.
- Click Browse and upload a passport style photo of yourself with a blue or white background. The image size should be 420x420 pixels, around 100Kb and must be in JPG format.
- Click Upload and Confirm to complete the process.
- If your photo is rejected, you will receive an email requesting you to re-upload a valid photo. Please follow the steps above.
- Once the photo is approved, the Security Office will print out your card. Click here for details on collecting your physical student card.
