Introduction

Alumni are an asset to any educational institution. 

At University of Nottingham Malaysia, we aim to celebrate the numerous outstanding accomplishments of our graduates, especially those who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities, as well as demonstrated leadership and excellence in their respective fields and industries.  

The Nottingham Alumni Awards presents you with an opportunity to nominate yourself or other deserving alumni in five different categories, highlighting your achievements and recognising how far you have progressed in your career after graduation. 

Winners will receive the award during the February Graduation Ceremony 2027.

Call for nominations

Graduates of University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) are welcome to nominate themselves or other fellow UNM alumni for the Nottingham Alumni Awards 2026. UNM staff, academics, and current students are also allowed to nominate alumni. 

Please refer to the Terms and Conditions before submitting your nomination.  

Date: 1 September 2026 -  30 October 2026

Nomination Deadline: 5PM, Friday, 30 October 2026 

UNM alumni who graduated in the recent two years (2024-2026) are ineligible for nominations.

Award Categories

2

Arts, Cultural and Creativity Award
Alumni who have carved a career in the arts, cultural, and creative industry and who have demonstrated their artistic ingenuity, influence, and creativity.

  • Areas of work could include arts, design, poetry, language and linguistics, traditional media, music, video, TV, and online content media creation (e.g. blogging, vlogging, YouTube and social media).

Business and Entrepreneurial Award
Alumni who are active in initiating and contributing to business opportunities, innovative and creative in creating new ideas with the potential for growth.

  • Areas of work could include entrepreneurship, business, economics, technology, and finance.

Community Service Award
Alumni who have made an exceptional contribution and commitment to creating positive social change and improving the lives of others, and has made a positive impact regionally, nationally, or internationally through community service work, philanthropy or volunteering.

  • Areas of work could include education, peace and justice reducing inequality, poverty and hunger and broader humanitarian work or work for social good.

Environmental and Sustainability Award
Alumni who have distinguished themselves through their career and achievements in the world of science, environmental, and sustainability, and who can demonstrate the impact and scale of their achievements in their profession or beyond.

  • Areas of work could include climate action, clean energy, medicine, sustainable cities and communities, engineering, industry, and construction.

Research and Knowledge Exchange Award
Alumni who have made significant contributions to the professional, academic and research workplace, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, careers, and services have honoured the University’s legacy of excellence and have a significant impact at the regional, national, or international level.

  • Areas of work could include researchers, academics, and journal publications.

Arts, Cultural and Creativity Award

Professor Meng Huat Chau

Master of Research in Education (TESOL)
2009 graduate

Professor of Applied Linguistics and Language Education at Zhejiang International Studies University, China

Professor Meng Huat Chau has contributed to international projects focused on sustainability and social justice and received multiple awards, including the 2024 British Council ELTons Awards. Creative expression also plays a key role in his work, with contributions to literary and reflective forms alongside academic writing. His approach to scholarship values connection, care, and curiosity, principles nurtured during his time at the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Julius Lim Wee Ming

CEO and Co-Founder of B&B Labs

Julius Lim is the CEO and Co-Founder of B&B Labs, a pioneering Malaysian skincare brand that specialises in microbiome-friendly products. With over 25 years of experience in cosmetic science, business strategy, and product development, Julius has led the company to integrate prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics with Asian botanicals like durian and mangosteen through its unique E-Cology Plus+ complex.

Community Service Award

Azhar Abbas Abdalla Ibrahim (Sholgami)

BA (Hons) in International Relations, 2017
MSc in International Development Management, 2019
PhD candidate in Africana Studies at Cornell University

Azhar Sholgami is a humanitarian practitioner, researcher, and community advocate focused on conflict response, post-conflict reconstruction, and underfunded humanitarian crises, particularly in Sudan and Africa. A PhD candidate in Africana Studies at Cornell University, her research explores post-war recovery, humanitarian financing, and the political economy of aid in conflict-affected areas.

Environmental and Sustainability Award

Muhammad Azamuddeen Mohammad Nasir

BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science, 2019
Master of Research in Environmental and Geographical Sciences, 2022

Freshwater Ecologist and Environmental Scientist

Azamuddeen is a freshwater ecologist and environmental scientist focused on biodiversity conservation and public engagement in Malaysia. He is currently pursuing a PhD in the ecology and genetics of freshwater fishes, particularly developing environmental DNA (eDNA) for biodiversity monitoring and conservation. His research tackles assessing and protecting biodiversity in threatened tropical freshwater ecosystems using scientifically rigorous methods.

Research and Knowledge Exchange Award

Dr Chai Wai Siong

BEng in Chemical Engineering, 2012
PhD in Chemical Engineering, 2017

Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China

Dr Chai is a leading researcher in clean and sustainable energy technologies, with a focus on green fuel development, biomass-to-biofuel conversion, ammonia utilisation, and green propulsion systems. His work has resulted in over 45 peer-reviewed journal articles, seven book chapters, and significant contributions to industry-academia collaborations in clean energy.
