This is a compulsory requirement under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555), which applies to all private universities in Malaysia, including UNM.

Important Note:

  • New students from the September 2023 intake will follow the 2023 MPU structure and complete all assigned modules.

  • New students from the February 2022 intake will follow the 2022 MPU structure and complete all assigned modules.

  • Returning students who join before January 2022 intake will continue under the 2013 MPU structure and complete all assigned modules.

Please note that the MPU structure may be updated from time to time based on the latest guidelines from the Ministry of Education.

Why General Studies Matters

At UNM, the General Studies Department is committed to making MPU modules meaningful for your academic and personal growth. These modules are designed to:

  • Build study and employability skills to support your academic success and future career.

  • Strengthen leadership, writing, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship skills to prepare you for life after graduation.

  • Encourage community engagement through co-curricular activities or community service, helping you develop empathy, teamwork, and emotional intelligence.

For Malaysian students, MPU modules promote national unity and contribute towards the spirit of nation-building. For international students, they provide an introduction to Malaysian culture and communication skills in Bahasa Malaysia, which is widely used in everyday life.
