Research at the School of Computer & Mathematical Sciences

The main focus of research in the School of Computer & Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) is two-fold:

  1. Developing various intelligent systems and computational techniques with applications to a wide range of real-world problems.
  2. Developing innovative mathematical models to applying mathematics in various fields, such as cybersecurity, healthcare, and education. Our work focuses on pushing the boundaries of mathematical modelling, computer science and artificial intelligence while fostering collaborations with leading local and international research organisations, universities, government agencies, and industries that can benefit from intelligent computing and blending traditional mathematical disciplines.

    We offer high-quality doctoral training to postgraduate students who wish to pursue an MRes, MPhil or PhD. As a research student you will work under a supervisor who will assist you in your research and thesis design. Most research programmes are based on the research interests of staff members within the school, however if you are privately funded and wish to pursue research in alternative areas we support the opportunity to consider other projects.

The school’s multi-disciplinary research includes areas:

1. Image Processing and Computer Vision 

We develop advanced algorithms for image analysis, object recognition, and 3D reconstruction with medical imaging, security systems, and robotics applications. Our researchers are pushing the boundaries of computer vision, enabling computers to interpret the world around them. 

2. Artificial Intelligence and Application 

We explore machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing techniques to develop AI-powered solutions for diverse sectors, including healthcare, finance, and education. Our work in AI drives innovation and transforms how we interact with technology. 

3. Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing 

We focus on designing user-friendly interfaces and interactive systems, making technology more accessible and intuitive. Our research in ubiquitous computing explores integrating technology into our everyday lives through wearable technology and smart homes. 

4. Software Engineering and E-Learning

We develop robust and secure software systems, ensuring the reliable performance of technology in critical applications. Our work in e-learning involves creating innovative platforms and educational technologies to enhance the learning experience. 

5. Data-Driven Modelling and Computation 

We advance data-based methodologies and algorithms, driving progress in areas such as disease modelling, image analysis, and microalgae growth. Our collaborative research results in interdisciplinary applications, significantly in engineering, physical sciences, and medical sciences. 

6. Algebra and Arithmetic

We explore a core area of pure mathematics to boost cybersecurity innovation, creating stronger cryptosystems with enhanced security and improving computational complexity with algebra. Our researchers specialise in Nonassociative Algebra and Loop Theory, essential in the field of cryptography.

7. Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Higher Education

We develop and evaluate innovative teaching methods grounded in the latest educational research, aiming to elevate student learning both within our Department and across the broader academic community. Our work focuses on improving the teaching and learning of mathematics to ensure accessibility while nurturing interest.  

 

Our commitment to research excellence has gained international recognition. Research at the School of Computer Science UK Campus ranked in the top 10 percent of UK institutions in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, with 80 percent of the research activity rated as world-class or internationally leading.
