FAQ
What are the benefits of studying mechanical engineering?
Mechanical engineering offers a stable career with many opportunities, even during economic uncertainty. A mechanical engineer has a wide range of working knowledge on computer applications, such as MATLAB for programming, including knowledge from nearly every other engineering discipline. For this reason, a graduate with a mechanical engineering degree is highly sought after in any field where an engineer is needed.
What career opportunities are available for Mechanical Engineering graduates?
You can find career opportunities across a huge variety of sectors, including manufacturing, oil and gas, construction, professional services, and power generation and energy. Our graduates are thriving in roles such as mechanical engineer, design engineer, CAE engineer, field engineer and more. Graduating with this degree also enables you to work with top global employers like Petronas, Accenture, Daikin, and Gamuda.
What type of projects that I will be doing during my studies?
Throughout the first three years of studies, you will complete group design projects and also, apply mechanical engineering knowledge, such as material science, in one project. These projects will provide you with hands-on experience, preparing you for your future commercial projects in your career later. You will be dabbling in various parts of product delivery, such as writing business plans, selecting materials, and prototyping. In your final year, you can choose your individual project, whether experimental- or computational-based, that showcases all the elements you have previously learned in project management.
Are there any industrial training opportunities?
Yes, students who enrolled in the MEng (Hons) programme must undergo at least 12 weeks of industrial training at an external company to fulfil the requirements of the programme. Industrial training normally takes place during the summer break, from June to September, during your second or third year of study.
Are there opportunities to study abroad in the UK or China campus?
Yes, you have two opportunities: through a transfer or a student exchange scheme. The first option is to transfer to the UK or China campus within the first three years of study and become a registered student there. You will pay the UK or China university fees and spend the remainder of your course there.
The second option is to participate in a student exchange scheme to the UK or China campus for up to a year during your second or third year of study. You will still be a registered student of the Malaysia campus under this scheme.
For both study abroad opportunities, you must meet the minimum academic threshold of 55% average in the year before the transfer or exchange.
