Welcome to the School of Politics, International Relations and Economics (SPIRE)—a vibrant and forward-thinking academic community at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Officially launched on 1 October 2025, SPIRE was formed through the merger of the School of Politics and International Relations and the School of Economics, bringing together interdisciplinary expertise to offer a dynamic academic environment focused on global affairs, public policy, and economic development.

We focus on advancing knowledge in political science, international relations, and economics through rigorous research, innovative teaching, and meaning engagement with society. We foster a learning environment that encourages critical inquiry, interdisciplinary thinking, and a real-world application, preparing students to become thoughtful leaders and change-makers.

Our programmes are designed with a strong emphasis on graduate employability, equipping students with analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that are highly valued across sectors. We benefit from close academic collaboration with our UK home schools while exercising growing autonomy in sharing our curriculum and research agenda.

Our Vision:

  • To create and share impactful knowledge in Politics, International Relations, and Economics.
  • To lead high-quality research and scholarship that inform global and regional debates.
  • To cultivate student learning through critical enquiry and reflective practice.
  • To design curricula that prioritise graduate employability.
  • To engage with policymakers, practitioners, civil society, and citizens to influence public discourse and policy.
