Q: What career prospects are available to International Relations graduates?
A: An International Relations degree opens doors to a wide range of careers, including roles in the diplomatic corps, public service, government affairs, international organisations (such as the United Nations and its various agencies), the private sector (banking, finance, marketing, sales, consulting), advocacy (NGOs, civil society), education, and research.
Q: What kind of jobs can I get with an economics degree?
A: Our BSc (Hons) in Economics and BSc (Hons) in Economics and International Economics degrees are hugely versatile with an unmatched flexibility in a wide range of careers. You could achieve careers in investment banks (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase), management consultancy firms (Ernst and Young, Deloitte, PwC, etc.), high-impact policy-making jobs in think-tanks and government agencies (Bank Negara Malaysia, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning Unit) and international policy institutions (World Bank, IMF, United Nations).
Q: What will I learn in the International Relations degree?
A: You'll gain a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Politics and International Relations, from theory and methods to data collection. You'll also be introduced to key concepts in International Relations, including major powers, institutions, and regional organisations. As you progress, you'll have the opportunity to explore more specialised topics and themes, such as specific countries or regions, climate change, human rights, international development, and political economy.
Q: What is the difference between a BSc (Hons) in Economics degree and a BSc (Hons) in Economics and International Economics degree?
A: The BSc (Hons) in Economics is ideal if you prefer more flexibility in choosing economics modules as your electives, such as development economics, experimental and behavioural economics, and international trade. Alternatively, the BSc (Hons) in Economics and International Economics is ideal if you aim to gain a solid understanding of international trade and international finance in today’s increasingly globalised world.
Q: What support does the School provide?
A: We offer comprehensive support, including personal tutors for pastoral care and academic guidance, a Senior Tutor, a Disability Learning Officer, and access to the University's Wellbeing service.
Q: Can I study a new language while completing my degree at UNM?
A: For the International Relations degree, you can either take French or Spanish as a core component of the degree or explore other languages as elective modules through our university’s
World Languages Modules.
Q: Are there any student associations for Politics and International Relations students?
A: While there isn’t an official student association just for Politics, International Relations, and Economics, you can get involved with existing Student Associations such as SPIR-NOTT, the Nottingham Economics Society and the UN Youth Association. All three work closely with the School and are great platforms for students interested in global affairs, diplomacy, political engagement, and economics.
Q: Are mathematics and statistics important for studying economics?
A: Yes. A solid foundation in maths and statistics is essential for success in our economics programmes. In your first year, you’ll take quantitative modules, followed by two econometrics modules in your second year. In your final year, you can also choose from optional econometrics-focused modules to further strengthen your skills.
Q: Can I study Economics or International Relations abroad as part of my degree at UNM?
A: Yes. You can apply for inter-campus exchange opportunities to spend up to a year at the University of Nottingham campuses in the UK or China, subject to placement availability. You may also join our competitive Universitas 21 (U21) global mobility programmes, which lets you study for up to a year at one of our prestigious partner universities worldwide.
