At the University of Nottingham Malaysia, we offer hands-on learning experiences through a range of field courses for our Environmental Science undergraduates. These courses provide practical exposure to real-world environmental challenges in diverse tropical ecosystems.

Tropical Environmental Science Field Course (Year 2)

This immersive 7-day, 6-night residential field course takes place on Tioman Island, located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Students explore a variety of tropical communities and ecosystems using a broad range of field techniques.

Key topics include:

  • Coral reef sampling and ecological assessment
  • Mangrove ecosystem studies
  • Marine turtle observation
  • Microplastic analysis in coastal environments
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem function in island habitats

This course equips students with valuable skills in environmental sampling and data analysis in a tropical island setting.

Tropical Ecology Field Course (Year 3)

Delivered as a 7-day residential experience in Royal Belum State Park (Perak), this field course focuses on inland tropical rainforest ecosystems. Students gain first-hand experience working in one of Malaysia’s most biodiverse protected areas.

Key topics include:

  • River ecology studies
  • Forest structural assessments
  • Interviews with indigenous and local communities
  • Plant-animal interaction observations
  • Ecological assessment techniques

This module deepens students' understanding of tropical ecology and conservation strategies.

Local Fields Activities

In addition to the major residential field courses, our programme also includes shorter one-day field trips throughout the Klang Valley and areas surrounding our main campus. These experiences provide regular practical engagement throughout the 3-year programme.
